During a light weekend of action for both the Midland Atlas Block Flyers and Penetang Kings, the Kings missed out on a glorious opportunity to gain a stronger hold on first place in the Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario Junior C Hockey League standings.

Playing Jan. 12 in Alliston, Zenon Byblow scored three goals, including the overtime winner at the 4:14 mark, as the Hornets posted a 4-3 win.

Kings goals came from Craig Speers and two from Aaron Duval provided the Kings with a 3-1 lead in the contest, before Byblow helped vault the Hornets to their comeback win.

Penetang jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first period before the Hornets responded with one goal of their own. With his second goal of the game, Duval later extended the Kings lead to 3-1.

Alliston outshot Penetang in the game 32-28. Chris Daniels was tagged with the goaltending loss.

The Kings opened the weekend with a 5-2 win over the Stayner Siskins in front of 469 fans on Jan. 11 at the Penetanguishene Arena.

Bradyn Parent, Aaron Duval, Lenny Robillard, Adam Heskamp and Kelly Loughran scored for the Kings, with Duval and Loughran adding two assists each. Tyler Lumley was the top playmaker with three assists. The Kings held a 2-1 lead after one period and extended it to 4-2 after 40 minutes of play. Corey Moore picked up the goaltending win.

Alliston kept pace with Penetang, doubling up Erin 6-3 on the same evening.

Meanwhile, the Midland Flyers suffered a 3-1 loss to the Fergus Devils in their only game of the weekend on Jan. 11. Jesse Taylor scored the lone Midland goal, while Tyler Bly turned in a solid effort in net, taking the loss. Fergus held a 2-1 lead after two periods of play. Midland was blanked during their six power-play opportunities.

Following weekend action, Penetang continues to hold down first place with a 30-5-0-1 record and 61 points.

Alliston (28-3-3-0) is close behind with 59 points and they have two games in hand on the Kings.
Fergus sits in third place (22-9-1-2) with 47 points, followed by the fourth-place Midland Flyers (13-16-3-3) with 32 points. Erin (14-20-0-1) has 29 points, followed by Stayner and Schomberg with 17 and 11 points respectively.

Jan. 17, the Midland Flyers travel to Stayner to do battle with the Siskins.

On Jan. 18, the Erin Shamrocks visit the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre to take on Midland in an 8 p.m. contest. On the same evening, at 8:30 p.m., the Penetang Kings host the Fergus Devils.
