Wal-Mart wants your aluminum cans.
The retailer will be holding aluminum can drive from Apr. 21-28 at the Collingwood store, in an effort to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.
Karen Charman, a Wal-Mart associate, was working on an Earth Day project for the store and wanted to do something with recycling the aluminum cans at the store.
After some research she spoke to Huronia Auto Wreckers, which agreed to purchase the cans from her and will also donate the bin for the drive.
"I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to do a fundraiser for our local Habitat for Humanity," she said. "I was researching for an Earth Day project and this just happened to fall into that category."
Charman said the goal is to collect 1,000 pounds or about 24,000 aluminum cans. If that amount is collected, the auto wrecker will buy the cans for $500, which Wal-Mart will match with a donation of its own. The amount will then be donated to Habitat for Humanity which will be able to apply to aluminum manufacturer Alcan which also has a program that will match the funds.
The bin will be located at the end of Wal-Mart's driveway for residents to drop cans off. Charman is asking donors to put the cans into the bin loose, as it makes it easier for the company to recycle them.
Wilson said the money raised will be put towards the next Habitat for Humanity building project.
"I think it's great that Wal-Mart and Karen are doing this," said Habitat for Humanity ReStore manager Dennis Wilson.
Wilson said he isn't certain when the next Habitat for Humanity build will take place as the organization is still looking for property.
