The Collingwood and District Humane Society's new shelter should be completed later this summer says volunteer Maggie Lowe.
"It's going very well," she said.
Lowe said the organization is entering the second phase of its fundraising campaign and hopes to raise another $300,000 to complete and outfit the inside of the shelter.
The group recently launched its 'Buy a Brick, Lend a Paw,' campaign. For $100, people can buy a brick for the shelter and their name will be place on a plaque inside the new facility, which is located on the Tenth Line.
Lowe said it is a good opportunity to honour a current or former pet or a gift for someone that is an animal lover.
She said they also have opportunities for people to put their name on a cat condo or a dog run. Dog runs cost about $10,000 to sponsor while cat condos cost between $2,000-$5,000.
Lowe said they have raised more than $500,000 but are still hoping a major donor comes forward. She said fundraising is always tough, especially with worthwhile costs like the hospital and the library raising money.
"There are people who will donate to us no matter what," she said.
Lowe says the 6,000-square-foot shelter is progressing nicely and she hopes it will be completed in the next several months. She is quite surprised how much work was done over the winter. Lowe said the shelter not only serves Collingwood, but also Creemore, Stayner and Wasaga Beach.
She said the shelter will give the organization a home and a presence but also will allow potential pet owners to see the cats and dogs up close.
