Huronia West OPP used two spike belts in an unsuccessful attempt to stop a stolen vehicle from Stayner before it finally crashed into snow bank in Wasaga Beach and came to a halt.
The incident began around 2:15 a.m. on Sun., March 2 when police witnessed a brown, 1999 Ford pickup that was speeding on Cty. Rd. 27 in Springwater Township.
Police ran a check on the vehicle and found it had been stolen from a Stayner home on Feb. 28.
Police signaled for the vehicle to stop but the cruiser was ignored.
A spike belt was deployed on Cty. Rd. 27 in Elmvale, causing one tire to deflate, but the vehicle continued onward, turning westbound onto Cty. Rd. 92.
Another spike belt was deployed on River Road West in Wasaga Beach, deflating more tires but the vehicle continued on to Main Street, where the driver lost control and came to a stop after hitting a snow bank on Main Street Bridge.
A subsequent investigation determined the driver was drunk and driving without a valid licence.
A Wasaga Beach man is charged with flight from police, possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired operation and three counts of driving while disqualified.
