You can't spell Hockley without hockey.
Collingwood resident Herb Hockley has spent the last 40 years volunteering for a number of local hockey organizations and has been nominated for the RBC Local Hockey Leaders Award.
The RBC Local Hockey Leaders program is a national initiative aimed at recognizing and rewarding those "behind-the-scenes" hockey volunteers who dedicate their time to supporting grassroots hockey in their community while helping young athletes realize their potential.
The winners will be announced on Fri., Mar. 6 and will receive $10,000 towards a minor hockey cause in their community, a trip for two to Toronto to be recognized at a special ceremony at the Hockey Hall of Fame and a signed Team Canada jersey.
The program recognizes 13 hockey volunteers from across Canada.
Hockley has been involved in hockey in a number of capacities, as a coach, volunteer, president, scout and fan.
He is the president of the Stayner Siskins and was involved with the Collingwood Blues for more than 15 years.
Hockley has also coached a number of teams, and can often be seen at the arena, scouting players for a number of teams.
"He is the heart and soul of the Jr. C Siskins," said Matthew Holland, who nominated Hockley for the award. "He does 75 to 80 per cent of all our sponsorships."
Holland says Hockley has been involved in hockey for more than 40 years and says he is always going to a game or helping out.
"His passion is so strong for the sport," he said. "Too bad we don't have more Herbs around."
Hockley, 76, was a player for Hespeler in 1947 and says he has enjoyed the sport since he was young.
He says it's the people involved with the game that keep him going.
"You meet a lot of good people," he said.
Hockley says the goal in hockey is to help young people achieve something.
"If you can help one young fella' screw his head on right, it's a good thing," he said.
"If you're not in it to help the young men, you're not in it for the right reasons."
