Triangle's athletes good as gold

Georgian Triangle athletes have been making a name for themselves in recent months. Here are some the locals who have left the community to play at a higher level and a few notes on how their sports careers are progressing.

Andrea Bevan

The Collingwood native recently returned from Germany with a gold medal from the 2008 Air Canada Cup as part of Canada's under-22 women's hockey team.

When not representing her country, Bevan is the captain of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks team and was 2006 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) most valuable player.

Nicole Trott

The Wasaga Beach native is a senior for the University of Vermont Catamounts women's basketball team. Trott has started two of the nine games she has played in, averaging about 16 minutes of floor time.

The former Collingwood Collegiate Institute player has a field-goal percentage of .524 and is averaging 3.3 rebounds per game. The Catamounts currently sit second in the America East conference standings with a 9-4 record.

Josh Godfrey
The Collingwood-born defensemen is currently playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and was a member of Canada's gold medal-winning squad at the World Junior Hockey Championships this year.

The six-foot-one, 210-pound defender has scored 11 goals and 26 points in 32 games with the Greyhounds and sits with a +43 rating. The Greyhounds sit first in the West Division with 52 points.

In November, Godfrey was signed to a three-year contract with the Washington Capitals. Godfrey was drafted in the second round (34th overall) by the Capitals in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In the summer, Godfrey played for Canada in the Canada-Russia Super Series.

Sean Dinsmore
The Clarksburg native and former Collingwood Blues player is in his first season with the Varkaus Eagles of the Finnish Elite League's second division. Dinsmore has played in 15 games for the Eagles, notching six points and 24 -penalty minutes.

The five-foot-nine, 190-pound defenseman scored 33 points in 40 games with the Blues in 2006-07 season.

Tyler Brown

The Wasaga Beach native is in his rookie season with the Plymouth Whalers, the defending Ontario Hockey League Champions. Brown has played in 11 games but has yet to tally his first OHL point.

Brown played for the Penetang Kings in 2006-07, scoring 12 goals and 12 assists and helped lead the Kings to a league championship while being named the top rookie. The Whalers sit third in the West Division with 42 points.

Gary Pardon
The Collingwood resident and mixed martial artist will be competing in the Extreme Fighting Challenge event in Dublin, Ohio on Feb. 2. Pardon, who trains and teaches at Barton's Martial Arts in Collingwood. The six-foot-two, 250-pound Pardon is 1-1 in his MMA career.

Graham McNabb

The Minesing native and Stayner Minor Hockey product is in his fourth season with the Brampton Battalion of the OHL. McNabb has played 37 games for the club this season and has six goals and 23 assists and a + 3 rating.

The five-foot-eleven, 180-pound left-winger has played in all 68 games for the team over the last two seasons, scoring 25 goals and 58 points.

Kristy McLaughlin

After graduating from the University of Central Florida, the Wasaga Beach golfer has attempted to make her mark.

She finished 15th in the CN Canadian Women's Tour Championship in Quebec in September. In the tournament, McLaughlin finished with rounds of 78, 79 and 76.

Britt Janyk

The Collingwood resident is a member of Canada's national ski team and is off to a strong start to her season. Janyk has had two podium finishes this season, finishing first in the downhill  in Aspen on Dec. 8 and third in Lake Louise on Dec. 1.

She also finished fourth in the Super G in Are, Sweden. The 27-year-old Janyk trains out of Whistler during the winter and trains in the Georgian Triangle during the summer.
