Members of the SIU investigate the scene outside the Kozlov Centre on Bayfield Street where two Barrie police officers were stabbed by a man who brandished a knife after they pulled his vehicle over. Police shot and killed the suspect.

Two Barrie Police officers are undergoing surgery after being slashed by a suspect wielding a knife this morning.

The seriousness of the injuries have not been released.

Witnesses say two cops pulled over a vehicle on Bayfield Street Sunday morning at around 10:30 a.m. When ordered to the ground, the suspect refused and instead walked away from police, heading northbound on Bayfield.

After following the suspect for several minutes, the man pulled a knife and slashed one of the cops. The other officer shot the suspect several times, according to witnesses. All three were taken to RVH where the suspect was pronounced dead, said SIU spokesperson Frank Phillps.

The SIU – a police watchdog that conducts criminal investigations in serious cases that involve a civilian and an officer, especially if it results in serious injury or death – sent eight investigators to the scene.

Bayfield Street is closed between Cundles Road and Livingstone St. for the investigation. Many businesses in the area are closed.

A command post has been set up on Heather Street and detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses.
