Youth looking for summer work are aod Service Canada Cenlso feeling the effects of the recession.
The Collingwotre for Youth was in the community looking to raise awareness of Hire a Youth Week.
The government-funded program helps students find summer employment by operating the website www.jobbank.gc.ca as well as helping youth with resumes, cover letters and offering interviewing techniques.
"Finding a summer job can be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack," said youth services officer Laura Kerslake. "In the coming weeks, youth services officers will be contacting local employers to make them aware that our SCCY is now open and ready to assist them in any way it can."
Kerslake said the economy is certainly impacting the number of people hiring this summer.
"Every summer we try to encourage employers to hire a student," she said. "I think this summer is a little different."
She said some companies that traditional hire students have closed and some can't afford to hire more staff.
Kerslake said the group operates an odd job squad, where people can hire youth for a week or two to perform a variety of tasks.
