Ninety-five people elected to run eight kilometres, from Duntroon to Stayner, in an annual road race on that day.
Race organizer Dayn Leyshon said that the number of runners in this year’s race was the most ever since the race began in 1967.
Dayn’s father, Ken, decided to do something special to celebrate Canada’s 100th birthday – the Duntroon to Stayner Road Race was his gift.
Ken or Dayn has organized the race since that first run.
The previous high for runners was 85.
“Our little race is gaining in popularity it seems,” Dayn said.
Winning the race was Paul Jewel in 29:34. He was followed by Curtis Coyn, 29:56. Other top racers were Stayner’s Shelby Dickey, 35:49, fastest elementary school female; Justin Viljakainen, 35:39: top elementary school male; Meaghan Wessel, 36:53, high school female; Nottawa’s Chris Dobinson, 32:01, high school male; Lorna Visser, 44:34, masters plus female; Jewel, 29:34, masters plus male; Robin Holmgren, 31:27, masters female; Coyne, 29:56, masters male; Audrey Lee, 32:55, open female; Michael Kulukowsky, 30:06, open male and third overall.
Leyshon added that he would like to thank the Sinclair family of Duntroon, the Township of Clearview, Bub Dickey, and the Stayner Kinsmen.
Let’s not forget to thank the Leyshon family especially.
