Local athletes win medals at Special Olympics event

Patrick McLaughlin of Wasaga Beach, Robert Vanderwedden of Stayner, Marie Banks of Collingwood and Rodney Barr show off their medals from the recent Special Olympics spring games held in Oshawa.

Four local athletes brought home some hardware from the recent 2008 Special Olympics Ontario Provincial Spring Games held in Oshawa on May 29.

Patrick McLaughlin of Wasaga Beach, Robert Vanderwedden of Stayner, Marie Banks of Collingwood and Rodney Barr of Collingwood all participated in the five-pin bowling competition.

All team members are clients of E3 Community Services.

McLaughlin won a bronze medal, Banks brought home two medals, as did Barr. Brian Bishop of Wasaga Beach coached them.

The athletes each bowled six games and participated in the Region 6, which also includes Midland, Newmarket, Muskoka, Barrie and Orillia.
