Carrier calls for withdrawal of CCI band funding because of suspensions

The Collingwood Collegiate Institute marching band almost had its funding from the Town of Collingwood revoked on Monday.

Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier put the motion on the table that called for the town to not award the $5,000 grant to the band. The motion was eventually defeated.

The reason for the motion was a number of students - Carrier said about 30, but CCI principal Mike Abram refuted that number - were suspended for an incident when members of the band were participating at an event at Walt Disney World in Orlando. About 140 members of the band were on the trip.

Carrier said he expects people to behave in a certain manner when they are representing the school and the town. Carrier also claimed that a similar incident occurred when the band traveled to Niagara Falls.

"I don't think we should reward inappropriate behaviour," he said.

Abram wouldn't say why the students were suspended but called it "inappropriate behaviour."

After students returned to Collingwood, a meeting was held between parents and staff and students were suspended. Suspensions ranged between five and 25 days, according to Carrier.

Councillors Kathy Jeffery, Norman Sandberg and Ian Chadwick felt taking away the funding would punish those who behaved appropriately and those who are coming into the band next year.

Chadwick said it was a little "old testament," of council to punish those who hadn't done anything wrong.

"I find it a little difficult of us being the moral police," he said. "They've always been great representatives for us."

CCI music director Kevin Hamlin was pleased with council's decision to not punish the incident.

"I'm pleased that Council was able to view and keep perspective on the  fine work that our youth has done representing and contributing to our   community musically over the past two decades, and that Council understands that the isolated poor choices of some certainly do not represent the actions and of the vast majority. This confidence displayed by Council is also a positive nod to a continuation of this excellence in the future," Hamlin said.
