Despite an 11-2 win over the Stayner Siskins on home ice Friday night, the Jr. C Alliston Hornets slipped to second place in the league standings after Penetang pulled two wins out of the weekend. The Penetang team has two games in hand however, and the Hornets, who have been burning up the Georgian Mid-Ontario standings this season, should regain their hold on first.

The Penetang Kings have 65 points with 38 games played (32-5-0), while the Hornets boast a record of 30-3-3 in just 36 games. The two teams are a wealth of wins away from the third place Fergus Devils who herald just 47 points on the season for 22-10-1.

The question in the Hornets' Friday night match-up against the formerly indominable Siskins wasn’t who scored, it was “who didn’t?”

Thomas Faris came away from the contest with a hat trick and an assist, while teammates Zenon Byblow, Kurtis Brossard and and Robbie Rutledge scored a pair each. Brossard and Byblow also assisted on two for a four-point night. Rounding out the 11 goals was Luke Vanderhulst and Kyle Montipit with a shorthanded marker in the first period.

Alliston went ahead 3-0 in the first, and started the second frame with another pair to make it 5-0 before the Stayner squad scored its first on goaltender Jon Porretta. Then Alliston notched another two before the buzzer to end the second sounded with the Hornets up 7-1.

Stayner made it 7-2 at the start of the third period, but then Alliston sealed the win with four more goals in the final 10 minutes of play.

The Stayner pipe duty was split between Brad Kuzmich and Jordan Monahan. Both Stayner goals were scored by Zach Schaap. In the second and third period.

The win comes as no great surprise as the Hornets currently boast four of the top five scorers in the entire league. While the number one spot belongs to Penetang’s Aaron Duval with 60 points for 27 goals and 33 assists in 35 games, Alliston’s Byblow ranks second with 29 goals and 19 assists in 36 games for 48 points. Alliston’s Kurtis Brossard is third in the league scoring stats with 47 points, while Ryan Algar is fourth with 46, Thomas Faris is fifth after the weekend with 45 and Brett Eeles is sixth with 44 points.

The Hornets are in Midland this Friday night to meet the Flyers so there will be no regular home game at the New Tec Rec that night. In fact, there won’t be anymore home games for the Hornets before the playoffs. Saturday they are in Erin for a meeting with the Shamrocks and Sunday they travel to Stayner to face the Siskins once again in a busy weekend of play. The Hornets final two games of the regular season will also be played on the road as they wrap the season with games against Fergus and Penetang Feb. 1 and 2 respectively the following weekend.
