It is unfortunate that Anne Hochkirchen (From Our Readers, Clean up weeds: Reader, Wasaga Sun, Wed., July 18) has spent so much time and effort being upset by the natural order of things here along Wasaga Beach.
Perhaps she should educate herself on aquatic plants and the benefits they pose to our beautiful beach. There are many. I shall inform you of some.
1) The plants' complex root systems hold more water and sand in one place which in turn actually means that due to more wind resistance in the long run you end up with a new dune and more sand.
2) Some of the plants, namely milkweed, are the food of Monarch butterflies. The ones that we love to decimate while we uproot its food supply along highways and waterfronts.
Did you know that these magnificent little beings migrate all the way to Mexico? Pretty spectacular, and wonderful to have the beauty of them here at the beach.
I know that she finds mosquitoes irritating, and trust me I have had a fair many bites myself - but she should get a bug jacket or some spray and she'll do just fine. They are a vital part of our ecosystem whether we like them or not.
Perhaps Anne, these plants that you despise were attempting to grow somewhere else, maybe another area in Wasaga that used to be green space, but was alas re-routed once its sprout hit the hard lock of fresh pavement.
Have you and your group researched how many tonnes of newly lain asphalt have been paved over our lands of Wasaga this season Anne?
Perhaps one of those aquatic plants was trying to sprout in one of the many new parking lots of our many new strip malls.
And now, you want to go ahead and uproot the natural aquatic plants on the beach?
When will this end?
When will we revert from being an ignorant population of people who know nothing of the very land we chose to settle upon?
